Chiropractic Neck Treatment

What Causes Neck Pain or a Stiff Neck?

Neck pain is one of the most commonly-reported symptoms that Americans complain about to their doctors. Unfortunately, few people understand the true meaning of their stiff neck.

Rather than a just minor annoyance, a stiff neck can become much more serious. If left untreated, perpetual neck stiffness has the potential to seriously and permanently affect the position and movement of the spine and the muscles that hold the neck in place. At Pain & Injury Clinic of Utah, located in Ogden UT, our chiropractors understand that sometimes, you can’t just shake off a stiff neck. If you are suffering from neck pain, request a free consultation to start your chiropractic treatment program.

Most neck pain and stiffness is the result of tissue damage to the levator scapulae muscle. This muscle is located at the side of the neck and connects the neck’s cervical spine with the shoulders. But how does this muscle even become damaged in the first place?

5 of the most common reasons for excessive pain around the neck & shoulders:

Poor posture.

Our connection to technology continues to grow, and we find ourselves perpetually staring at a screen as a result. Between computer work during the day and newsfeed scrolling at night, it’s easy to find yourself slumped in a chair. If you frequently slouch or sit in a position that pushes your head and neck forward, your poor posture is putting undue strain on your neck. You’ll likely experience continuous, troublesome stiffness as a result.

Sports injuries.

If you’re an athlete, you probably already know how quickly improper form can bring you down and damage your game. Contact sports like football and rugby can put you at risk of trauma to the head, neck, and shoulders. This can lead to muscle tears, especially if you have not properly stretched and warmed up your muscles beforehand.

Whiplash is one of the most commonly reported injuries following vehicle accidents. It involves damage to the muscles surrounding the neck after a fast, unexpected jerking of the head and shoulders.  Symptoms of whiplash can quickly worsen and become permanent if left undiagnosed for too long. Therefore, if you’ve recently been involved in a car accident and are experiencing pain or stiffness in your neck, take the time to call a chiropractor and receive treatment.

Excessive stress.

Did you know that too much stress can cause physiological symptoms? It’s true! Stress-induced neck stiffness begins with the trapezius muscles that stretch from the back of the neck to the shoulders. These muscles tense up as an automatic response to the discomfort of being stressed out. As a result of this constant tension, you may be left feeling overly stiff and sore- which can lead to a creeping, constant feeling of discomfort in your neck. It’s not just “all in your head;” stress and anxiety can cause neck stiffness and pain that’s very real and treatable.

A poor sleeping position.

If you haven’t changed your pillow in a while, don’t be surprised if you wake up with a stiff neck! Sleeping in an awkward position or with a pillow that’s too flat to properly support your neck can leave you feeling stiff and sore come morning. If you feel that your pillow needs an upgrade, consider choosing an orthopedic pillow. While regular pillows can be comfortable, orthopedic pillows relieve tension in the neck and back while you rest!
